I have a 1987 John Deere 185 Hydro with a 17 hp Kawasaki FC540V motor. When i start the mower the battery light comes on and stays on & when i engage the blades they will stay engaged for a few seconds then the blades will disengage with the pto switch still on & the battery light goes off for few seconds.Hi my Kawasaki Fc540v has problems with starting, im pretty sure its the ignition. I have seen a few used carbs on ebay, but they have the shutoff solenoids on the bottom of the bowl. Mine does not have this feature.

The fix is this: remove the fuel solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor after removing the wire. Remove the he aluminum washer off of the solenoid. You can replace this with an o-ring if preffered. I have a John Deere HD75 with a Kawasaki FC540V-AS18 17 horse motor. It has been a very reliable mower, but about a week ago it refused to start. I know it had good gas, but it wouldn't fire even with starting fluid. I pulled the plug and grounded it against the motor and could see no spark.Let it sit awhile and it would start again. After a few days it would not start at all. After checking it , it was not getting spark, So I proceeded to do some basic maintenance. FC540V carb adjustment. I took the carb apart on my 260 today cleaned out the jets and the bowl was filthy. I turned the main adjustment on the top out 1.5 turns same for the one on the bottom.
