Started to overheat after a trip to an ORV park but I washed the radiator out and its pretty clean on the outside. The purpose of a thermostat is to let the car get up to operating temperature and then open up to not let it get any hotter. It is the optimal temperature for the car. If you run without a thermostat it would not let the car get up to operating temperature for a long while.The reason they did this is they wanted the oil to be hotter and the exhaust gas temps to be lower. By having lower exhaust gas temps they were able to run 20% exhaust gas in the cylinder on the compression stroke rather than the normal 10%. Believe it or not, this actually increased fuel economy by 5 to 6%.Low on power and running rough after warming up. My 98 TJ with the 2.5l has been acting up lately. It seems to run pretty normal when cold, but a few minutes after reaching normal running temp, it gradually seems to idle rougher and rougher, it's low on power and there's a drop in oil pressure.
