What about the L47 4.0 Liter Olds Aurora V8? ~250hp out the box, race proven (650 horsepower in twin turbo LMP trim) and was good enough for Carroll Shelby. The Aurora was FWD, works for your transverse setup. It should be lighter than the 4.6 Northstar. Not sure on price or availability on your side of the Atlantic.
