Adjust the cable so that it thinks you are pulling on the lever. There are two adjustment points. You might need to use both of them to get the cable tight enough to not need the lever. It's not hard to do. Just remove the axle first. Remove the tires and hubs, remove the large axle nuts, unbolt and remove the rear brakes and brake panel (4 nuts), and knock the axle out the right side.
